The magnificent Hall and historic Barns are on land that was once part of the Manor of Rivington, which in 1202 was owned by the Pilkington family who held it until 1605. It was then owned by a number of distinguished families until it was purchased in 1900 by William Hesketh Lever, later to become Lord Leverhulme.
It was Lord Leverhulme who developed much of the woodlands and gardens and who built a scale replica of the ruined Liverpool Castle, which still stands alongside one of Rivington’s picturesque reservoirs.
